About Tanzania Institute of Rail Technology – Tabora
Tanzania Institute of Rail Technology (TIRTEC) is an in- house training Institute of the Tanzania Railways Limited. As an all- purpose in house training institution, the Institution is of recent origin. It was established at the verge of the collapse of the East African Community, when Tanzania Institute Trainees were deprived of the courses at Nairobi Railway Training School. The Regional Manager of the then East Africa Railways Corporation, with an alternative training facility decided in February, 1976 to make the then Railway Training School Tabora, an all purpose in house training center for all categories of Railway staff in Tanzania.
As an Institute of Rail Technology, however, the Institute has a long history. It traces its history from 1947, when it was established by the Tanganyika Railways apprentices School. The Tanganyika Railway apprentices School had been specifically built for the training of junior traffic personnel. It had a capacity of 40 trainees at any one time. It runs courses in Goods and Coaching Accounts, Trains Working and telegraphy.
With the formation of the East African Railway and Harbours Administration and subsequent amalgamation of the Tanganyika Railways, Kenya and Uganda Railways in 1948, the School was made a branch of the Railways Training School Nairobi. Under the East African Railways and Harbours administration, the status of the school and course contents remained the same. But due to the increased demand in junior traffic personnel the school was expanded in 1956, boosting the residential capacity to about 135 students at any one time.
After the formation of the East African Railways Corporation (E. A. R.) in 1969, the Tabora Railway Training School still ran traffic courses only as part of the Railway Training College Nairobi. It was therefore only at the verge of the collapse of the East African Community in 1976 that the Tabora Railway College was established as an all purpose in – house training centre for all categories of Railway staff in Tanzania and was given the name of Railway Training College.
Following globalization policy where the Railway Corporation was conceded to the Rites of India and the Government of Tanzania in ration of shaves the name changed to Tanzania Institute of Rail Technology.
From the above chronology, it is apparent, therefore, that the Tanzania Institute of Rail Technology is an all purpose in – house training institution of recent origin and is still in the process of organizing and equipping itself as a fully fledged in- house training institution as well as diversifying the programmes to be delivered at the Institute.
