About Kilacha Agriculture and Livestock Training Institute
The Kilacha Agriculture Training Institute, commonly referred to as Chuo Cha Kilimo Kilacha, Kilacha Agriculture and Livestock Training Institute is located in Kilimanjaro region, Moshi Rural District, in the out skirts of Himo town. Some 9Km from Holili, the border town to Kenya. While at the Institute, you can easily enjoy the attractive natural scenery of Mt.Kilimanjaro .The Institute is the subsidiary of Kilacha Production and Training Center (KPTC) owned and managed by the Catholic Diocese of Moshi. The Institute was established in 1984 and registered by VETA by then with only 25 students. In the year 2008 the institute was upgraded and received NACTE registration and started conducting the Certificate course in general agriculture using the same syllabus being used by other Training Institutes under the Ministry of Agriculture . Currently the Institute has the Capacity of 700 students.
Kilacha Production and Training Centre (KPTC) was established in 1971 under the ownership of the Catholic Diocese of Moshi. The main objectives of the center are:
- Empowerment of the youth with skills in agriculture and livestock keeping
- Create employment opportunities to the surrounding community and beyond
- Generate revenue to support empowerment of the youth and sustainability of the church.
The center started with farming and livestock keeping and later training started in 1984. Currently the farm extended its activities to fishery, production of aggregates, bricks, animal feed and training seminars to the communities in entrepreneurial skills, farming and livestock keeping techniques. The center’s main activities are production in one hand and training on the other.
Kilacha Production and Training Center is owned by the Catholic Diocese of Moshi under the mandate of Right Rev. Bishop Isaac Amani. Day to day supervision of the center is on the hands of the General Manager, Rev. Fr. Landelini Makiluli. He is assisted by three managers in the management team: Operations Manager, Mr. Melkiades Msimbe, who is also a planning officer of the center; Training Manager, Mr. Benito Mwenda, who is also Principal of Kilacha Agriculture and Livestock Training Institute and Finance Manager, Sr. Juliana Shirima.
In recognition of the challenges faced by the youth, particularly unemployment, drug abuse, HIV infections, poverty and lack of skills, Kilacha initiated programs that will help youths to face the challenges positively. Training is one ofthe programs to impart skills for employment and self employment. Training is conducted by Kilacha Agriculture and Livestock Training Institute (KALTI) which is part of Training Department. Apart from training the center supports the community and youths in particular through employment opportunities. About 150 persons were employed on permanent and contract basis and more than youth 200 work as casual labourers in projects of farming, brick making, stone crusher, piggery, poultry, fishery, dairy cow and environment care.
