NMB Bank Plc. (“NMB”) is a full service commercial bank incorporated in the United Republic of Tanzania. Through its 3 main business divisions: Retail, Wholesale, and Treasury, NMB provides a suite of financial services and products to retail customers, farmers, SMEs, Corporates, Institutions and the Government.

The bank has 226 branches, over 9,000 Agents (Wakala) and more than 700 ATMs across the country and is represented in all districts of Tanzania. NMB has over 4 million customers and employs over 3,400 staff. It is listed at the Dar Es Salaam Stock Exchange and its largest shareholders are the strategic partners Arise B.V with a 34.9% shareholding and the Government of Tanzania with a 31.8% shareholding.

The bank has been named The Safest Bank in Tanzania for the year 2020 by Global Finance Magazine. NMB Bank was also awarded as the Best Blended Finance Partner in Africa for banks working with International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank Group in 2019. Also, the Best Retail and Best Commercial Bank in Tanzania by the Banker East Africa Magazine in 2018.

NMB Bank is one of the largest commercial banks in Tanzania, providing banking services to individuals, small to medium sized corporate clients, government services, large businesses and agriculture lending.

NMB Bank was established under the National Microfinance Bank Limited Incorporation Act of 1997, following the break-up of the old National Bank of Commerce, by an Act of Parliament. Three new entities were created at the time, namely: (a) NBC Holdings Limited (b) National Bank of Commerce (1997) Limited and (c) National Microfinance Bank Limited.

Initially NMB Bank could only provide payment services as well as offer savings accounts, with limited lending capabilities, before becoming a fully-fledged universal retail bank.

In 2005, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania privatized the bank when it sold part of its shareholding (49%) to a consortium led by the Coöperatieve Centrale Raiffeisen-Boerenleenbank B.A. (‘Rabobank Group’).

Subsequently, there was further divestiture in 2008 when the Tanzanian Government off loaded another 21% of its shareholding to the Tanzanian public through an Initial Public Offering (IPO). The listing of the bank’s stock on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange has led to a diversified ownership structure.

Established in Tanzania in 1998, Habib African Bank belongs to the most famous, respected and trusted Habib family who are treated as the pioneers of banking industry in the sub continents.

Habib family has been in the forefront of an active and acclaimed international banking business for over 8 decades. Habib Esmail, following the death of his father at an early age, joined a leading dealer in metals, copper and brass and subsequently became a junior partner in the firm within five years by virtue of his hard work, honesty and business acumen. In 1920 he founded his own business of financing traders and introduced merchant banking under the name of Habib & Sons. After the death of Habib Esmail in 1931, his two sons, Dawood and Mohamed Ali not only consolidated their father’s business but took it to new heights by extending to new areas.

Habib Bank Limited which later on turned out to be the flagship of Habib family’s business was founded in Bombay in 1941. The bank relocated its head office to Karachi before the creation of Pakistan and played a pivotal role in meeting the basic banking and financial needs of the new country specially during its infancy.

Carrying on the mantle from Dawood and Mohamed Ali, their sons shaped the Habib Bank as one of the largest commercial banks in South Asia with 875 branches in Pakistan and 44 branches overseas. In January 1974 all domestic banks were nationalized in Pakistan; so was Habib Bank Limited. The group founded its operations in the UK in 1984, now known as Habibsons Bank Limited which expanded its network in the UK and opened a branch in Zurich, Switzerland.

Exim Bank Tanzania Ltd, an indigenous Tanzanian Bank ranking 5th in the country in terms of total assets, has announced a financial closure of TZS 75 Billion to finance and support long-term lending to small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in Tanzania.

The loan is meant to cover the lending gap to SMEs in Tanzania which is estimated at approximately 3 million enterprises, with research indicating a large majority of these are family owned micro enterprises (employing less than 5 people), and located mainly in small cities and rural areas.

Although data on the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) is minimal, indication shows that the SME sector wields an important role in the economy. Many SMEs cannot get access to financial services, while a negligible percentage rely on financial services from non-bank financial institutions such as mobile phone money transfer services which is quite expensive.

According to Exim Bank Deputy CEO, Mr. Jaffari Matundu “This is also in line with His Excellency, President of Tanzania, Dr. John Pombe Magufuli’s vision to transform Tanzania into an industrialized economy. SMEs are considered to be engines of growth in any economy and any industrialized economy should have large number of SMEs engaged in incidental and ancillary units to support large corporates / projects in the country. The massive projects in infrastructure sector will require enough local units to support backward linkages and supply services for successful completion of these mega projects. The loan has been accepted as a Senior Unsecured loan of TZS 75 billion from FMO and this is part of the bank’s strategy to support SMEs thereby generating employment and reducing poverty in the country. “

“FMO is extremely pleased to continue and intensify our relationship with Exim Bank through this new loan facility. Supporting local enterprises through trusted partners like Exim Bank is core to FMO’s mission”, Linda Broekhuizen, Chief Investment Officer.

The loan is also a testimony of Exim Bank’s trust and goodwill that the international development financial institutions place upon it. Exim Bank has a relationship with all renowned DFIs viz. IFC, EIB, PROPARCO and further this second loan with FMO has been a new feather in cap (honor). Exim Bank will be immediately drawing TZS 23 Billion and the balance over a period of next 17 months.

EXIM Bank is the first Tanzanian Bank to set foot print abroad and go international with now presence in 3 countries Comoros, Djibouti and Uganda. The Bank has been awarded ‘Best Retail Bank in Tanzania by ‘Banker Africa’ for 2016 awarded in May’17 and Best Employer in HR Governance and Employee Engagement in Tanzania for the year 2016 by Tanzania Association of Employers. The Total Asset and Shareholders Fund as on 31st December 2017 is at TZS 1.6 Trillion and TZS 231 Billion respectively.
